MEIGS TO WORTHINGTON Zanesville Jany 23d 1812- Dr Sir The ice in the Ohio has obstructed the passage of the Mail or you vould have been sooner answered. I have enclos'd to you a Letter for the Secy at War -- The Legis- lature have by Resolution placed the Field Artillery at the disposition of the Execu- tive -- and Chilicothe shall have its due proportion -- I hope the Secretary will furnish the munitions which I have desired. The People on our Frontiers, are uneasy - as you will see by the accompanying copy of a letter from the Commanding Officer in Dark County who is here well known by several members of the Legislature, as a man of Prudence, and Veracity. I think that a general Treaty might be had with the Indians, in the spring at some suitable Place -- conducted and terminated in such manner as almost totally to destroy the British Influence -- a thing absolutely necessary in the Event of a British war -- The Temper of an indian warrior is never neutral in time of commotion -- It is not in the nature of barbarous & warlike People to remain quiet Spectators of the wars of neighbouring civilized nations. I hope you will not fail to write me whatever may be interesting -- My Regards attend the delegation I am respectfully yr ob st. Return J Meigs Hon. Thos. Worthington - 45 |
