C. A. NORTON TO WORTHINGTON

Zanesville Decr. 2. 1811

Sir,

This day the legislature assembled; and tomorrow, we expect to hear the speech of the Governor.

The republicans, in one election, this day have obtained, what we consider, quite a triumph. Mr. Huntington represents Geauga County; and all the Quids, and all the federalists, and even some republicans had calculated, as a matter of course, that he would be elected speaker of the House of Representatives. But, as fate would have it, Matthias Corwin, Esqr., was elected Speaker pro: tem.

The votes were, 24 for Mr. Corwin, and 18 for Mr. Huntington: I hope, and expect that the election of Speaker, for the session, may terminate in the same way.

Mr. Kirker is elected Speaker of the Senate, pro: tem and C. A. Norton, Clerk, pro. tem. notwithstanding his Tammanyism, and all the opposition of McArthur, Foos, and others.

Since the Indian fight, the western country can furnish no news. I expect, our red brethren will not be soon in a fighting humor.

I learn, that goods, to a very great amount, have been run in from Canada, across the Lakes Ontario, and Erie. Mr. Huntington says, he saw $150,000 worth run across Lake Erie, into Ohio, on the Michigan Territory, in the month of September. Part of them were destined for the Missouri. So much for good, honest citizens; and British intrigue.

The question respecting the permanent seat of Govt. will be much agitated, this winter.

I am, respectfully

C. A. Norton
