WILLIAM JONES TO WORTHINGTON Philada. 21 Feb 1811 Dear Sir I had the pleasure of adressing you on the 12 & 13 and having touched upon the object of the nonintercourse and expressed my doubts and fears as to the sin- cerity of Napoleon. I now inclose an extract of a letter from a very respectable and judicious merchant of Bordeauz upon whose judgment and opinion I should place much reliance. My apprehension however cannot be removed until I know the fact of the release and restoration of the American property so iniquitously taken. Nevertheless from the knowledge I have of the writer of the letter from which the extract was taken and of the fact that this letter was kept back and hot delivered until tuesday last, and that the persons who arrived in the Admir from Rochelle have from some speculating motive ( it is supposed* represented every thing in the worst possible light, I think there is a ray of hope that our affairs there may mend. It is now known that this vessel will return imediately to france, but perhaps with a licence- I really feel for the delicate situation in which the government is placed with respect to the question of nonintercourse and regret that the session will so soon terminate, as a very short time must determine our future stand It appears to be a very general opinion that the Regency has taken place in England and that the orders in Council will be revoked and some melioration of the system of blockade tale place -- God grant that the two Devils may be constrained to relax and that we may keep out of the scrape. Please show this letter and the extract to our friend Macon -- I have recd his letter of the 16 and will write him soon I am sincerely your friend Wm Jones The Hon. Thos. Worthington |
