BENJ. HOUGH TO WORTHINGTON

Zanesville January 26th 1811

Dear Sir:

The bill for fixing the permanant seat of Government has passed the house of representatives; and is ordered for its third reading in the Senate, and will in all probability pass into a law -- The report of the commissioners is thereby confirmed - and the temporary seat of Government will remain at Zanesville for the present in consequence of which I shall be under the necessity of removing my family to this place, which I can assure you is an unpleasant task for me

From the returns made to the Marshal of our state, it is found that the number of inhabitants, (exclusive of Geauga county which has not yet made the proper return) is 227,843; which will entitle us to five representatives, and a large fraction pro- vided the ratio dont exceed forty thousand- It is almost sufficient to astonish the person who would reflect on this whole country beirg a perfect wilderness twelve or fifteen years ago, and now to pass through our State and attentively observe the farms, the buildings, in the country, the populous and flourishing towns, together with the improvements in machinery &c., and above all the unparalleled population of 227843 inhabitants in so short a period - And from the rapid migration to our State, we may very safely calculate on our numbers being doubled their present amount, withi five years -- Well may it be said, that "the forest blosoms like the rose."

I have not received a line from you since you left this place, tho' I forwarded thd receipts &c. w hich was in my hands and wish to know whether they arrived Safe --

The legislature will in all probability adjourn about the middle of next vreek - In hast, I am yours &c with due respect

Benjn. Hough

Genl. Thomas Worthington
