OSL JOHN SLOANE TO MEIGS

Canton 1 January 1813

Dear Sir

On the return of the Volunteer army of ohio from captivity I advanced money for the purpose of procuring Rations for their subsistance on the way home. I have written to the Secy of WYar and have been directed by him to have the provision returns examined & approved by you preparatory for Settlement I have enclosed one which was made out during Col. McArthurs stay here and another for advances made after his departure is still in his possession which I will advise him to submit to your inspection the advances were made at 15 [?] cents per ration -- on your being satisfied with these returns I would thank you to approve them and enclose them to me --

Everything depends on the N W army should it fail the national Character is down downl You must have regular army Militia will not do for anything more than a temporary defence of our territory if we are to depend on militia army and on contractors for supplies a few men will be able to keep us out of Canada -- From information received here it appears that a great part of the 1st detachment of Pennya. Militia have deserted and come home from what I have seen of the [illeg.] in its march through this place I have not much better hopes of it should danger press. [Va.?] Of our own Militia particular that under Genl. Tupper I have better hopes much depends on the officers -- but the men of Ohio have more at stake than those of Penna -- should Genl. Harrison be successful the road to fame is completely open to him, talents energy & courage appears so rare amongst our officers that with a tollerably well disposed force laurels may be easily acquired never was the interests and happiness of the whole state more dependent on the conduct and success of one man than that of Ohio is on Genl. Harrison I sincerely hope that no accident may prevent him from accomplishing his own & the Public wishes -

In great haste respectfully your obt Sert

John Sloane
