OSL PETITION TO MEIGS Springfield Augt 23rd 1812 To his Excellency govr Meggs Sir Considering the perilious situation we are plased in at this Critical moment a number of our Citizens think proper to address you, informing you of our millitary strength, we in Consequence of Capt Gates' Rifle Co. being taken from amongst us [are] left destitute of arms also beg leave to inform you that there is a powder Mill in this place that Manufactors a large quantity of Powder and has between one & two thousand weight now on hand, which we Consider to be in great danger, and for the security of which We pray your Excellency would order a guard, in Compliance of which you will oblige your Citizens and Humble Servants [Here follow the names of the petitioners.] |
