To His Excellency the Governor of the State of Ohio

Whereas we your humble Petitioners the citizens of Richland County have boon called upon to turn out our quota of Militia for the actual service of the United States and maturely contemplating the various difficulties which we already labor, under We deem it practicable their humbly to petition your Excellency, praying that we the few individuals aforesaid May be Exempt from a draught Most of us are young enterprising people who have brought out helpless families to the glomy wilds in order to buffet the many dangers and allarms which at all times beset us, and to open and cultivate the soil the chief part of us have families who without our immediate presence are w holly helpless and defenceless who in our absence will be Exposed to the brutal disposition of the merciless savages who are at present placed in a threatning attitude, And Exclusive of this calamity our difficulties are various we have little or no open land among us, and we have from twenty to forty Miles to mill, a nd no stand of grain or any of the requisites of nature on hand - lie doubt not that that the safety of our standing requires our assistance, yet the cries of our tender wives and infants ring louder in our Ears than the calls of constituted authority and being deeply impressed w itll the belief that cheriety begins at home, we your Excellency's humble Petitioners will we[?] pray
