RETURN JONATHAN MEIGS JR. AND THE WAR OF 1812

This is the second volume in a projected series of transcriptions dealing with the War of 1812 in the Northwest. In it are included all of the important items relative to the prosecution of the war as found in the Meigs Papers of the Ohio State Library and the Library of the Ohio State Museum. In it the reader not only sees the inner-workings of the governor, the militia, and the regular army, but gets a keen view of the Indian problems, the fears of invasion, and the popular thinking on local problems arising from the war.

For convenience, the volume is divided into several sections. The first consists of those manuscripts which deal directly with Meigs' problems in the war: Indians, the frontiers, general militia problems, etc. The following sections are letters written to Meigs from various outstanding individuals of the army, and the final section contains miscellaneous materials of a more general character. At the end of the volume is a complete listing of the various manuscripts included in this transcription.

Each entry is designated as to its source: items from the Ohio State Library are marked "OSL;" items from the Library of the Ohio State Museum are marked "OSM." When citing, an item should bear the names of receivers and senders, date, and depository.

Volume III of this series will be Thomas Worthington and the War of 1812. Other volumes will include the papers of William McAfee, Duncan McArthur, plus a series of journals and diaries of the war.

The manuscripts included in this volume are taken from the files of the Ohio State Library and the Library of the Ohio State Museum and have been microfilmed, copies of which are available at each institution.
