My Dear Sir/

I should have been down this Morning if a Return had arrived from Amherstburg, in Time, to have enabled me to make up my Dispatch last Evening. I have just received the Return. No Dispatch from below yet. They seem determined to leave us entirely to ourselves. I fear that any further Delay will be of no use nor answer any good Purpose: I do not know if you could sail to Day if the Wind will answer. Tho I certainly entertain the highest Opinion of you and of your Officers and have every confidence in the Courage of the Men you have with you, I cannot but feel the utmost Anxiety untill I hear the Result of your Seeking the Enemy. I hope you are convinced that, independent of my being so immediately con- cerned in the Result of your Efforts I shall feel the liveliest Interest in your Operations as they affect you individually. I shall most heartily rejoice in your Success, obtained without the smallest Assistance from the other Lake. I beg you will make some Arrangements for my soon hear- ing from you, and for our frequent Communication. Should an Express arrive to Day you shall immediately hear from me and if you should not have sailed I shall see you to morrow.

Sir:

I have the Honor to transmit to you an account of the termination of the late unfortunate Action with the Enemys Squadron.

On coming on the Quarter Deck after your being -,founded, the Enemys second Brig at that time on our weather Beam shortly afterwards took a position on our weather Bow, to Lake us to prevent which in Attempting to Weat[?] to get our Starboard broadside to bear upon her a number of the Guns of the Larboard broadside being at this time disabled fell on board the Queen Charlotte at this time running up to Leeward of us in this situation the two ships remained for some time as soon as we got clear of her I ordered the Queen Charlotte to shoot a head of us if possible and attempted to back our Fore topsail to get astern but that Ship laying
