35 appear again on the lake. This reinforcement, together with that of the Troops I have ordered forward to the Right Division will I hope enable M. Genl. Proctor effectually to resist the Enemy should they attempt to advance agt. Detroit or Amherstburg in consequence of their late success. BARCLAY TO YEO 25 H M Ship Detroit Amherstburg Sir The Enemys Squadron appeared off this Post this morning consisting of three brigs and Six -Schooners, they did not come so close as to distinguish more than that His Majestys Squadron were laying in advance of the Batteries. Information that has been received from various quarters tends to the firm belief that a serious attack is in meditation by the combined naval and military forces of the Enemy, either on this Post or on the new Settlement about twenty miles from this from whence all the general supplies are derived. Rather than such an expedition should be permitted to go forward without opposition, I shall, with such a force as I can get from Brigadier General Proctor sail and risk the battle -- Serious it may be but the conquest of the Settlement between Burlington and Amherstburg will utterly destroy whatever hope I have hitherto had of getting supplied with Seamen from you - The Garrison of Amherstburg is very small and if deserted by the Indians, it is nothing compared to the force that may be most easily brought against, it by General Harrison. If this place falls by any accident it is more than probable that the Indians will go home. The above may be foreign to the Service entrusted to my charge: but I feel it incumbent on me to make you acquainted with it from the opinion of the Military Officers who are so well qualified to judge of these matters. I should have sent you my Log, but I find that the Express cannot carry any thing more than Letters. I hope you have been successful against your opponent - and I have the honor to be Sir Your most Obedt. Servant (Signed) Re H, Barclay To |
