serious loss these Vessels to us and a very great accession to the force of the Enemy

I enclose a Copy of a Letter I recd from His Excellency Sir George Provost: which is in answer to one I wrote him relative to our wants and of the imperious necessity of their being Supplied.

You will receive any particular information relative to the Enemy from Lt Purvis

I have the honor to inform you that my look out Vessel was chased last Evening by the Enemy's Squadron consisting of 12 Sail Vizt: Three Brigs. the rest Schooners of various sizes.

Only night coming on prevented her being taken.

They are now within 20 Miles of Amherstburg I believe fortifying the Islands where there is an excellent harbour.

General Procter would have taken possession of it before them but he had not Men to spare to Garrison it, particularly as I could not ensure him that I would prevent the Enemy's trying to dislodge then.

All my attention has been turned since my arrival to the Detroit;
