I am happy to state that Lieut. Buchan arrived here with the rest of the Officers and seamen this morning early and that they are now on board with all the baggage they have remaining after the loss sustained in the retreat from Beaver Dam with the Army, Lest a Letter which I had the honor to address to you Yesterday should be lost, I shall again relate to you our motions since I left York on the 26th. The Sloop I conceived under existing circumstances to be by no means a safe conveyance across the Lake to either of the Creeks. I therefore took possession of our own batteaux; and divided those whom I would not put in her among the Eight Regt. in their boats - and coasted the first night for about 20 Miles -- next morning being anxious to get to Fort George to assist in its defence - I pushed right across to the 20 Mile Creek and arrived there about Noon of the 24th. On landing I had the Mortification to hear that the enemy had made good their landing and that our Army had retreated -- Still wishing to give my Assistance that lay in my power -- I went on and at 10 at Night after a fatigueing march thro' the Woods arrived at Beaver Dam 18 Miles from Fort George where they had taken up a position for the Night. I still had hopes of joining the Queen Charlotte at Fort Erie; but was told by Lieut Colo. Bishop on my arrival that she had sailed two hours before he left it.

Nothing was left then for me except to continue our retreat with the Army for a day or two and then proceed to Amherstberg by Land. On our arrival at the Forty mile creek -- I took the Batteaux and with a Company of the Newfoundland Regt. & Militia went on the Burlington Bay at the head of Lake Ontario and ther[e] gave Lieut. Buchan directions to take charge of the Party of Officers and Seamen -- and proceed by easy journeys to Long Point -- while I went post to Amherstburg to send a Vessel to bring them up. Most fortunately I met a man on the road who informed me that there were some Vessels laying here and that he had only arrived a few hours.
