ARMSTRONG TO HARRISON War Dept. 14th July 1813. Sir, I regret that the letter ordering Col Johnson westward ever reached you. Since the date of that letter, information has been received, that the whole story of Dixon & his intentions of attacking St. Louis &c. with which Gov. Edwards so often alarmed himself & others - was without foundation -- Believing that the Col's expedition towards Brownstown would have put him out of the reach of this order, & knowing that your opinions resembled my own in rolation to those western combinations of Scioux & Foxes &c &c I had hoped that the want of foundation in the story would have reached you before the Col's return & furnished a reason for delaying the execution of the order. Is it too late yet to correct this error? If it be possible it ought to be done. Johnstons Regt. would be useful in making demonstrations by land while you go by water and in pro- tecting the frontier against small desultory attacks. I am sir, very respectfully Your most obedt. servt. John Armstrong Major Gen. Harrison 101 |
