HARRISON TO MONROE (No. 29) Head Quarters Franklinton 3rd Jany. 1813. Sir, I have the Honor to enclose you herewith the official reports of Lieut Colo Campbell of the 25th Ultimo and 1st Inst. I am entirely satisfied with the Colonels Conduct and beg leave to recommend him Major Ball and the rest of the Officers and Soldiers of the Detachment who were fortunate enough to have an opportunity of distinguishing themselves to the notice of the President. I will venture to predict that Colo. Campbells future course will support the Character he has obtained, in the ccmencemen of his Military service. Major Ball my friend and associate in Gen Wayne's Army would do Honor to any Service. Lieut Col Simerall deserves great credit for the excellent discipline of his Regiment which perhaps equal that of any other of Dragoons on the Continent. The Char- acter of Major McDowel has been long established in Kentucky for intreped- ity. At an age when most Men return to the enjoyment of ease, this hardy Veteran Soldier solicits every post of danger difficulty and fatigue with the ardor of a Youthful Warrior. The Conduct of the other Officers is so particularly described by Col Campbell that it is unnecessary for me to repeat them. Knowing each Individual I heartily accord in the sentiments he has expressed of there merits. There is however a circumst- ance which Col Campbell has neglected to mention that so honourable a Young Hero now no more as well as to the army that I cannot pass it over. Major McDowel, Capt. Trotter and Capt. Hite have all informed me that Lieut Walby of Capt Markles Troops of Volunteer Dragoons like the gallant Spencer could not be brought to leave his post after having received two Wounds one of which treatened his arm. In this Situation he was mounting his HOrse to make a charge when a Ball passed through his shoulder, in short, Sir, the whole Detachment have redeemed a solemn pledge given to me the moment of the departure that they would obey their officers and support the Character of American Soldiers I have the Honor to be with the greatest Respect Yours &c Willm Henry Harrison Honbl.
