HARRISON TO EUSTIS Head Quarters 17 Miles from Fort Wayne Sept. 11th. 1812, 9 OClock FM No. 11. Sir. I have the Honor to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of the 30th. Ultimo which was brought to me this moment by Express. The necess- ary arrangements for the procuring of provisions and ammunition added to the trouble of establishing an Issuing Commissary Department in conse- quence of the failure of the Contractor has prevented me from reaching Fort Wayne as soon by one day as I expected. I shall however reach it tomorrow but I have every reason to believe it will not be without a severe contest. No information has been received from the Fort since the 3rd Inst and should the Indians have been assisted by a British detach- ment I fear it would not have been able to hold out. A small detachment which I sent to endeavour to penetrate to the Fort has just returned without accomplishing their object altho they defeated a small party of the enemy. You need not fear the issue of the action which I expect will take place tomorrow. My Troops are in high Spirits and will I am per- suaded do honor to themselves and their Country -- I have the Honor to be &c (signed) Will Henry Harrison Honbl [Note: A letter appeared to be wanting which detailed the operations of the army at and in the neighbourhood of Fort Wayne upon the approach of the troops the Indians fled after having burned all the Houses round the Fort two detachmts were sent against the enemy [illeg.]] Ed. From here on the note is so illegible that one cannot read it. 30 |
