remains then Sir to do those Duties by your Subalterns which the Sergeants have not the Virtue to perform -- And as a Commandant of a Regiment I should not hesitate to issue my Warrant accordingly -- legally however first constituting them Sergeants for Reasons which must be obvious -- and judging from my own Feel- ings I can have no Doubt of the most ready Acquiescence; for it is no Novel thing you know with the regular mi- litary for commissioned Officers to per- form the Services of private Sentinels, And it becomes a point of Honour to do them with Alacrity-- And this is all, I think, I need observe at present upon your Letter; if it be not sufficient you will please to inform me -- I had flattered myself the gooa Sense of your people would have made our Duties easy and pleasant and it would afford me very great Satisfaction to be informed that the present, or the prospect of their fu- ture, Attentions was such as would jus- tify a general Amnesty for past Delin- quencies.
