Sir The Inhabitants of this Place are under considerable Apprehensions of an Attack from some Party of Indians which may be detach- ed for the purpose of destroying the Settlements while the Army is in Advance - and as the Thing is very practicable though I do not think it pro- bable it will be well to take some measures to guard against it -- you will therefore please to order a Guard of militia to mount at some convenient Place in this Village every night at Sun Setting -- from which Patrols are to be kept out constantly during the Night until Sun rising when the Guard will return to their Habitations. I do not know whether the people of Columbia are equally apprehensive with those here, but they are certainly as much exposed -- you will therefore direct the same measures to be taken there, and the number to be employed at each Place you will pro- portion to the effective Strength at each, so as not to make the Service too burthensome - It can not long be necessary for the Army |
