in a State of the greatest possible Security - the same Measures that were pursued in the last year, of re- siding in stockaded Works and a Vigilance at all Times to receive the Enemy will beyond a Doubt prove ef- fectual -- I am not ignorant of the Inconveniences that may result to the Inhabitants from such Li- mits to their Pursuits -- that they came into this Country professedly to till the Ground And that to give up their Plantations for another Year will be almost like Death to their fairest Hopes and Expectations -- It can not however Sir in my Opinion be avoided with any Degree of Safety -- and the Attempt to extend yourselves in the present Complexion of Affairs would be a Temerity that might cost you your Lives and Improvements - The United States will, I am convinced, as soon as possible afford you such Aid and Protection as may meet your warmest Ex- pectations, And in the mean while to defend yourselves, and cultivate only and with the Utmost Caution Lands enough for your immediate Demands should be the Extent of your Views - for the Enemy emboldened by their Successes will dare in every unguarded moment to distress you-- I shall endeavour if the Situation |
