Gary Ness called the meeting to order at 10.06 a.m. and welcomed the board and the day's guests.

The board approved the written minutes for the 16 February and 14-15 June meetings.

Members of the board reported on current events and projects from their institutions and regions. George Parkinson reported that the Ohio Historical Society would be presented with the Society of American Archivists's 2001 Distinguished Service Award at the organization's annual meeting next week. This award is one of the highest honors that the Society can bestow. It is awarded to a member institution that "…has given outstanding service to its public and has made an exemplary contribution to the archival profession." He also gave an Ohio Memory update. Against the 15 August deadline 318 submissions were received, bringing the total number of collections submitted for the project to more than 600. A total of 272 collections have been accepted from about 65% of the counties. Enthusiasm and participation for the project has increased and many institutions are making repeated contributions. Charles Arp reported on the work on the Joint Electronic Records Repository Initiative partners with OCLC on developing a digital archives to track and preserve web-based documents that exist solely in electronic formats.

Mary Manning from the Ohio State University's Center for Folklore Studies and Geoff Smith, head of Ohio State's Rare Books and Manuscripts Collection, described a draft grant proposal to improve access to the Francis Lee Utley manuscript collection. Ms. Manning outlined Utley's career, stressed the importance of his papers, and distributed copies of materials from the collection. Comments and ideas on ways to improve the proposal were discussed.

George Parkinson reviewed the Strategic Planning Retreat, which was held at the State Library of Ohio in June.

Barbara Floyd reviewed the "Year 1" action steps and reported on the Strategic Planning Subcommittee's meeting that was held on 27 July. She presented the five goals of OHRAB that the subcommittee identified. The board discussed ways to get others more active in OHRAB. Suggestions included an OHRAB sponsored workshop at the SOA conference and a 2002 Archives Week display at the Ohio Historical Center. Draft charges for OHRAB sub-committees were discussed and members assigned to them as follows:

· Membership Sub-Committee: Keith Corman, Raimund Goerler, Jim Oda, Gary Ness, Carol Tomer

· Grants Sub-Committee: Barbara Floyd, Ronald Koetters, Julie McMaster, George Parkinson

· Public Records Program Sub-Committee: Charlie Arp, Roland Baumann, David Larson, Mike Lucas

It was decided that the next OHRAB meeting would be on Friday, October 12, 2001 at the Ohio Historical Center. Committees will meet first and after lunch the board will meet.

Raimund Goerler led a discussion of the OHRAB mission statement and board members suggested revisions. Charles Arp informed the board that Judy Walker (OHS State Archives Department) has redone the OHRAB web site. The rosters of the new sub-committees will be posted on the new web site.

The meeting was adjourned at 1.25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

George Parkinson
