The Chesler Group, Inc. and The Raymond John Wean Foundation for the preservation and rehabilitation of the 1868 Market Block Building at 147 West Market Street in Warren
The Market Block Building on the Courthouse Square in the Warren Commercial Historic District was built in the late 1860’s and acquired its current configuration in the late 1880’s. The facade features the long, slender windows, decorative metal hoodmolds and elaborate roof cornice of the Italianate style fashionable at that time. After over 100 years of service to the community as retail and office space it was left vacant until the Chesler Group started this rehabilitation.
The extensive rehabilitation work completed on the Market Block building is a striking example of how authentic historic features plus modern adaptation add up to more than the sum of their parts. The result is a dramatic and effective environment that augments the beauty of the original design.
Every exterior and interior surface; masonry, tin, wood, and steel was meticulously restored. Damaged or missing elements were replicated to match the existing features including 25 windows replicated with Philippine mahogany. New contemporary but compatible elements were added to fuse with the existing historic fabric such as the new storefront. In addition to the state-of-the-art mechanical and safety systems, the rehabilitation included increasing the usable floor space through innovative lighting solutions and adding 3 feet to the height of the garden level by excavating and exposing the beautiful stone foundation walls.
Since its completion in May 2012, The Market Block Building is the new headquarters of The Raymond John Wean Foundation, an important community leader and a catalyst for change in the area. To underscore The Wean Foundation’s commitment to Warren and its neighborhoods, the 120-person assembly room, known now as the Western Reserve Room, is dedicated as community meeting space. And the garden level has been designated as incubator office space for new and developing non-profit programs.
With the announcement of plans to rehabilitate the Kreske Building 2 doors down, the well-executed $4 million rehabilitation of The Market Block Building is already proving itself as a stimulus for growth in downtown Warren and the surrounding area.
