Link to Ohio History Central web page regarding Milton Canniff, FEBRUARY 28, 1907 - Milton Caniff was born in Hillsboro, Ohio. Caniff was best known for 'Terry and the Pirates,' 'Steve Canyon' and 'Mate Call,' popular comic strips from the mid-1930s through the late 1950s.
Link to Ohio History Central web page regarding John Rankin, FEBRUARY 4, 1793 - Abolitionist and Presbyterian minister John Rankin was born. From 1825 to 1865, Rankin, who lived in Ripley, Ohio, provided shelter for more than 2,000 runaway slaves in his home overlooking the Ohio River. Harriet Beecher Stowe immortalized his efforts in her book, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin.'
Link to Ohio History Central web page regarding Fort Laurens, FEBRUARY 22, 1779 - The siege of Fort Laurens began. The fort withstood a month-long attack by British-led Indians before its starving garrison finally abandoned it. Located near Dover, Fort Laurens was the only fort that the Americans built in Ohio during the Revolution.
Link to Ohio History Central web page regarding Columbus, the capital city of Ohio, FEBRUARY 14, 1812 - The Ohio legislature named Columbus as the state capital. It was chosen as the site for the new capital because of its central location within the state and access by way of major transportation routes at that time.
Link to Ohio History Central web page regarding the Coonskin Library, FEBRUARY 2, 1804 - One of the first circulating libraries in Ohio was established in Athens County. Although it was named the Western Library Association, people called it the Coonskin Library because raccoon furs provided the money to purchase its initial collection of 51 books. Most of these are now at the Ohio Historical Center.
