The Adena Pipe

/ Large (10") + postage & handling(10% discount for members) A replica of a human effigy pipe that was discovered in 1901 by Ohio Historical Society archaeologists during the excavation of a prehistoric Indian mound located in Chillicothe, Ohio, on an estate called Adena. In subsequent years, archaeologists assigned the name "Adena" to other similar mounds and to the prehistoric Indian culture that built them. The Adena people occupied much of central and southern Ohio from approximately 800 BC to the time of Christ. The pipe is similar to other smoking pipes made by the Adena people in that it is hollow through its entire length, although the opening tapers to a very small size at the mouthpiece, located at the very top of the figure's head. It is also similar to other pipes in that it was carved from Ohio pipestone that was quarried from the hills near Portsmouth, Ohio. The abrupt color change from the gray front to the dark red back appear to be natural, although the blotches on the front are likely stains from the soil in which it was buried.
