The Needs Assessment program of the Ohio Historical Society's Local History Office brings to your historical society team an experienced, professional, and sympathetic public history "coach." This colleague brings new perspectives to your institution and applies years of experience leading and assisting organizations just like yours. In a one-day site visit with staff and board (whether paid or all-volunteer), he will help you to identify the best next steps for your organization.
In the weeks following the Needs Assessment site visit, clients receive a 3-5 page report summarizing the finding of the visit and noting priorities for future action. The report is supplemented by technical leaflets and brochures where appropriate to address specific aspects of a historical society's operation. In the past, Needs Assessments have addressed subjects such as:
• Artifact care and preservation
• Board member responsibilities
• Volunteer recruitment and retention
• Museum exhibits
• Public programs
• Collection management and inventory
