I am very excited to be starting my second term with AmeriCorps and the Civil War 150 Corps. I have been a resident of the Northwest Ohio area for over twenty years now and have always been interested in the history of the area. I hope to accomplish many goals during my term in the areas of Membership Development, Regional/Host Site efforts, Volunteer Building, Educational programs and Tourism Efforts. I am also very excited to be working on the War of 1812 Bicentennial effort because of my history with it.

The AmeriCorps position attracted me because I felt it was a way for me to build a network outside of my native Michigan. After having graduated from college and not being able to find full time work in the museum field there I looked into AmeriCorps. When I found out about CW 150 I was excited to use my knowledge of the Civil War. I am extremely excited to be working with the Maritime Museum of Sandusky during this service year. My areas of expertise are in education, and collections management. I hope to use this experience not only to further my knowledge in these areas but also gain knowledge in exhibit building, and event planning. I am working with several organizations to facilitate events in North Central Ohio surrounding the Johnson’s Island Prisoner of War camp, and battle flag restoration projects.

As a member of the CW150 Leadership Corps, I look forward to working at my host site, the Oberlin Heritage Center. I took on this role because I really enjoy history, and I would like to hone my abilities in community organizing and all facets of public history. I am excited to facilitate and assist with Civil War commemoration events throughout Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Medina and Summit Counties, as well as learning more about this region’s history.

I am excited to begin my second year with the Ohio CW150. I know how much my region loves their history and I cannot wait to help them commemorate the Civil War 150. I am exctied to learn more about the Underground Railroad in my region and come up with great ways to share it with others. I am also looking forward to helping the schools in my region with their History Day plans.

I am excited to serve as the West Central Ohio Civil War 150 Leadership Corps member. I hope to work with the many organizations that work to preserve and present West Central Ohio’s history, on Civil War and War of 1812 commemoration projects, tourism efforts, and educational programming. I want my time with AmeriCorps to build and strengthen the area’s network of local historical organizations and the area’s interest and participation in National History Day. I anticipate using this experience to strengthen my knowledge of the region’s history and museum skills, as well as learn about tourism, event planning and volunteer management.

Having been born and raised in Columbus, I have a strong connection to the Central Ohio community. I am both excited and honored to represent the Central Ohio Civil War 150 Leadership Corps for this 2011-2012 service year, and especially thrilled to work with my host site, the Ohio History Connection (OHS). In my younger years, I volunteered at OHS and the Ohio Village as a child historical reenactor. So in some ways, it feels like I have ‘come home.’ This year, I hope to implement new sustainable heritage programs and commemorative events in my Central Ohio region, which are centered in Ohio’s African American involvement in the Civil War, and build new bridges between my host site and smaller local historical organizations that help to organize volunteer recruitment and educational outreach initiatives.

I am excited to be a part of Ohio’s Civil War Sesquicentennial celebration. There are so many aspects of the Civil War that fascinate me. One of them is how strongly Ohio impacted the Civil War. Also I find the medical/surgical history of the Civil War interesting. I enjoy learning about the different techniques that were used to help alleviate the symptoms and pain many soldiers experienced during combat. I am excited to help local historical societies and museums plan events for the sesquicentennial and meet the interesting people that go along with those events. All in all, I am ecstatic to serve with the AmeriCorps CW 150 group, and hope that being involved with the sesquicentennial commemoration will allow me to reach out to people and show them how essential the Civil War was, and how it shaped our country into what it is today.

The AmeriCorps position attracted me as I felt it was a very good way for me to re-introduce myself to the historical agencies and professionals in my area after having lived out of state for a number of years. As well, it is offering me the ability to educate and inform all aspects of the professional and public communities about the role my home area has played in history on all levels. One of my goals is to encourage additional involvement and support for the organizations and groups that seek to preserve and present the history of this area. Ultimately I am hoping my work will help to further establish the area as an interesting and enjoyable tourist destination and encourage further economic development.

It was always my intention to give a year of service to Southwest Ohio, the region in which I attended High School, upon completion of graduate study. Having spent over a year working as the development coordinator for Dayton History, I could not have been more excited when I read about Civil War 150! I am ecstatic to be working at the Quaker Heritage Center in Wilmington, Ohio for the 2011-2012 service year. My areas of expertise are in volunteer management, cross-organization coordination, public relations and program development. I am working with several Civil War-related organizations and committees and hope to facilitate a cluster of events throughout Southwest Ohio surrounding the dedication of Ohio’s section of the Morgan’s Raid Trail in 2013.

This is my second year with AmeriCorps Ohio CW150. Last year, I had the distinct pleasure to work with some outstanding organizations around the region, and I am excited to work with them again. I am even more excited by the prospect of developing new relationships with several other regional organizations to make the CW150 commemoration one that will be a memorable and transformational experience for those who are involved. This region is home for me, and it is here that I received my education, with a BA in History from Miami University and an MA in Public History from Northern Kentucky University, which I will receive in December 2011. I am looking forward to working with each of you as we transform our communities in the coming year.
