March 23-27, 1913: Statewide Flood
On March 25, 1913, this passenger engine of the Pennsylvania Railway Company fell into Mad River at the east side of the Big Four railway bridge just south of West Liberty. The following August, a diver attached chains to the locomotive and two steam derricks lifted the 90-ton locomotive from beneath the mud and water. A large crowd of people watched the feat. (From a report in the Urbana Citizen and Gazette, August 14, 1913.)
