EARTHWORKS EXHIBIT ENDS JAN. 7 AT OHIO HISTORICAL CENTER
Ohio Valley’s ancient past comes alive in EarthWorks interactive exhibit

COLUMBUS, Ohio - EarthWorks: Virtual Explorations of the Ancient Ohio Valley will end its three-month run at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7 at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus. The interactive exhibit recreates the lost heritage of the Adena, Hopewell and Fort Ancient peoples, who lived in the Ohio Valley thousands of years ago. Museum admission is $7/adult, $3/student and $4 parking/vehicle. Admission is free to Ohio Historical Society members and children ages five and under. The exhibit opened Oct. 7, 2006 and runs through Jan. 7, 2007.

EarthWorks includes virtual reconstructions of earthworks from 39 sites in the Ohio Valley and represents nearly 10 years of work by a team of architects, historians, technical experts, archaeologists and Native Americans. The interactive exhibit features topographic models, virtual artifact kiosks and an interactive video navigation system developed by the Center for the Electronic Reconstruction of Historical and Archaeological Sites (CERHAS) of the University of Cincinnati.

Founded in 1995, CERHAS is an interdisciplinary research/production laboratory within the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati. CERHAS is dedicated to research in advanced multi-media and digital imaging as applied in educational, museum, artistic and architectural settings, and involving vanished or otherwise inaccessible cultural resources, sites and landscapes.

The virtual reconstruction of the ancient earthworks is the centerpiece of this 500-square-foot traveling exhibit fabricated by the Cincinnati Museum Center, where it ended a summer run on Sept. 24 before embarking on a national tour. At the Ohio Historical Center, EarthWorks is located near Windows to Our Collections: Ohio’s Ancient Past, a display of more than 600 artifacts in the Ohio Historical Society’s collections that opened last July.

The Ohio Historical Center is located at I-71 and 17th Avenue in Columbus. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday and holidays, noon to 5 p.m. The Center is open all holidays except Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Thanksgiving.
