Special Holiday Event Celebrates a Presidential Marriage

(FREMONT, Ohio) — The marriage of 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes and his wife Lucy was filled with mutual love and respect. "Few men in this most important relation of life have been so blessed as I have been. From early mature manhood to the threshold of old age I have enjoyed her society in the most intimate of all relations", wrote President Hayes in one of many touching diary entries dedicated to Lucy. The couple married Dec. 30, 1852.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center commemorates the couple's close relationship during its Hayes Anniversary Celebration Saturday, December 27. This special event takes place 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and features a single-price, all-day admission of $9/adults and $3/children ages 6-12.

In the spirit of the season, the Hayes Anniversary Celebration is designed with families in mind. In addition to tours of the Hayes Home and Hayes Museum, where three special exhibits are on display, a full schedule of holiday happenings is planned.

  • Visitors partake of seasonal refreshments from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Museum auditorium.
  • Father Christmas is on hand to greet children of all ages from noon-4 p.m.
  • The Terra Community College Arts Chorale fills the halls of the Hayes Museum with the joyous sound of Christmas carols from 12:30-1:45 p.m.
  • Dr. Thomas Clark, aka Dr. Snowflake, discusses his unique cut-paper artistry (currently on exhibit in the Hayes Museum) during a slide presentation from 2-2:45 p.m. in the Museum auditorium.
  • The Inheritance Family Band performs 19th-century music on dulcimer and fiddle from 3-4:15 p.m. in the Museum auditorium.
  • Civil War reenactors from the First Independent Artillery Battery demonstrate how soldiers survived during harsh weather with a Wintertime Encampment on the lawn in front of the Hayes Home.

Also in conjunction with the day's events, South Creek Clydesdales provides horse-drawn sleigh rides through the grounds of President Hayes' Spiegel Grove estate from 1-4 p.m. The fee of $3 per rider is not included in the Hayes Anniversary Celebration admission.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont, Ohio. The facility is affiliated with the Ohio Historical Society.
