Mid-winter celebration on the frontier Dec. 6, 12
Children discover the history of Christmas traditions and make gifts at the Campus Martius Museum
(Marietta, Ohio) - The Campus Martius Museum hosts Mid-Winter Celebration on the Frontier Dec. 6 and Dec. 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. in conjunction with Marietta’s Hometown Holiday Weekends on Dec. 5-7 and 12-14. Children, ages 6-12, will learn the history behind Christmas traditions and make history-themed holiday ornaments and gifts while parents time to shop or enjoy a “date night.”
“We offered this program for the first time last year and it was a sell-out,” said Andy Verhoff, the museum’s manager. “We offer it again this year on two evenings instead of one, so that more kids can participate.”
According to the museum’s education specialist, Glenna Hoff, this year’s program is very different from last year’s. “We’re focusing on history of holiday traditions, such as where Christmas trees and ornaments came from and how people got into the habit of sending cards and giving gifts during the holidays. We’re also going to talk about what the area’s pioneers did to celebrate Christmas when Marietta was settled in 1788.”
While parents are shopping for gifts, children at Holiday on the Frontier will be making their own, including holiday note cards, a Christmas tree ornament, a silhouette and a holiday candle. Participants will record what they’ve learned in a memory book that will include their photographs in reproduction pioneer clothing.
The evening will also include flashlight tours of the Rufus Putnam House, the 220-year-old house inside the Campus Martius Museum. Flashlights simulate the candle and lantern light that lit the house when Rufus Putnam lived there 200 years ago. Children enjoying Mid Winter Celebration on the Frontier will experience the Putnam House in a whole new way.
The costs of the event, including museum admission, all craft materials and a snack is $12. For planning purposes, event registration is required by Nov. 28. Contact the museum at 740-373-3750 or ghoff@ohiohistory.org to sign up. Space is limited. The Campus Martius Museum is located at 601 Second St., Marietta, at the corner of Second and Washington streets.
The Campus Martius Museum is operated by the Ohio Historical Society, a private, non-profit organization that serves as the state’s partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio’s history, archeology, and natural history.
