Holiday Events Bring Family Fun To Ohio History
Ohio Historical Society helps celebrate history with holiday festivities
(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – The Ohio Historical Society presents festive holiday events in November and December at several of its historic sites and museums around the state. Visitors can experience the season with family and friends while enjoying Christmas traditions of the past.
At the Adena Mansion & Gardens in Chillicothe, you can make that special holiday wreath for your home using from natural materials grown at Adena. The Wreath Making Workshop will be Nov. 22 and 23 from 1 – 3 p.m. For reservations, call 740.772.1500 or 800.319.7248. Admission: $40/adult, $35/Ohio Historical Society adult member.
On Dec. 6 from 7 – 9:30 p.m., Ohio Village in Columbus hosts The Pleasure of the Cup: Drinks of the 19th Century for visitors 21 years of age and older. Come to sample several quirky and tasteful concoctions while learning the lore of some 19th-century drinks and parlor games at different buildings in the village. End your “pub crawl” with refreshments and tavern songs at the American House Hotel. Admission: $25/OHS member and $30/nonmembers Parking is $4 and free for members. Reservations required. Over two weekends Ohio Village brings the world of Charles Dickens to life with several Dickens-inspired events. The English author created an enchanting and enduring image of Christmas in the Victorian era and our costumed interpreters bring it to life during Dickens of a Christmas Dec. 12 – 13 and 19 – 21. Slow down from the hustle and bustle and experience the holidays with caroling, traditional holiday crafts, storytelling and entertainment — even meet Charles Dickens himself. The event is from 6 – 9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, and noon – 5 p.m., Sunday. Admission is $12/adult, $9/child, $10/Ohio Historical Society adult member and $7/Ohio Historical Society child member. Food, song and storytelling make for a special holiday gathering, so be sure to reserve your spot at a Dickens of a Dinner on Dec. 12 –13 or 19–20 at 6 p.m. or Dec. 21 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for Christmas Brunch. Afterwards, take time to enjoy the festivities at Dickens of a Christmas. If you’ve ever wondered about what happened to Scrooge after his Christmas morning reformation you are in for a surprise in a dinner theatre production of Dickens of a Mystery. On Dec. 17 and 18 from 7-9 p.m., enjoy a dinner buffet, witness a series of events and then help solve the mystery. Dinners are $57/adult and $47/Ohio Historical Society member. Cost of the brunch is $35/adult, $15.95 child age 6-12, $28/Ohio Historical Society adult member and $12.95/child member age 6-12. Parking is $4 and free for members. At the Hanby Christmas Open House come enjoy period Christmas decorations, refreshments, music and tours of composer Benjamin Hanby's house in Westerville Dec. 2 from 7 – 9 p.m. and Dec. 6 – 7 from 1 – 4:30 p.m. Hanby wrote and arranged the song "Santa Clause," which we know today as "Up on the Housetop." The Ohio Historical Center in Columbus hosts several events for visitors. On Dec. 4, 11 and 18 at 7 and 8 p.m., Echoes in Time Theatre presents Twas the Night Before Christmas: An Evening with Clement Clarke Moore. The solo performance explores the poet’s life and the Christmas poem for which is most known. Admission to the Ohio Historical Center is $8/adult, $7/senior, $4/child ages 6-12 and free for OHS members and children 5 years old and under. Parking is $4 and FREE for members. On Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., the Center’s Holiday Craft Workshop lets visitors choose from several crafts to make for loved ones Choose from beeswax ornaments, mini-gingerbread houses, pomanders, beaded snowflakes, elaborate cut-out snowflakes and paper Moravian stars. Nobody portrayed Christmas better than Norman Rockwell and Currier & Ives, and the Ohio Historical Center features the best Christmas imagery of both this holiday season. Rockwell’s America presents the artist’s vision of hometowns and the holidays with 3-D, interactive scenes of his most famous Saturday Evening Post covers. Currier & Ives: Illustrating America will feature timeless Currier & Ives lithographs from the Ohio Historical Society’s nationally recognized Christopher Collection. Experience these shows in “perfect harmony” as members of The Music Men Barbershop Quartet entertain visitors with their a cappella singing throughout the center Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and Dec. 14 from 2 – 4 p.m. Standard admission: $8/adult, $7/senior, $4/child and free to Ohio Historical Society members. Admission to Rockwell’s America is an additional $3.
Christmas Dinners at Spiegel Grove takes place at the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont on Dec. 4 and 6 from 6:30 – 10:30 p.m. The evening consists of a carriage ride, a six-course Victorian feast based on State dinners served during the Hayes administration and more. Advance reservation and payment required. Admission: $250/person. The Hayes Presidential Center also hosts Dillon House Christmas Teas. This event on Dec. 13 and 14 from 1 – 3 p.m. lets visitors enjoy the pleasures of a 19th century formal tea with a holiday theme. Admission: $25/adult, $14/child. Advance reservations required. In the same spirit, the site also is hosting Christmas is for Kids Tea on Dec. 20 from 1 – 3 p.m. Costumed wait staff serve holiday-themed goodies, while young and old enjoy the original interiors of one of Fremonts finest historic homes.
