Ohio Historical Society to Conduct Public Meeting Nov. 17
Regarding Future Management of Adena Mansion & Gardens

(COLUMBUS, OHIO)-The Ohio Historical Society will conduct a public meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 17 to solicit input concerning the future management of Adena Mansion & Gardens State Memorial by the Adena Mansion and Gardens Society. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Adena Museum and Education Center, 847 Adena Road, in Chillicothe.

Representatives from the Ohio Historical Society and the Adena Mansion and Gardens Society will be on hand to discuss the future management of the site and answer questions. The Adena Mansion and Gardens Society is a newly created non-profit group that was formed to manage the historic site. The organization was started by community leaders and others who are dedicated to ensuring that Adena remains open to the public.

Adena was the estate of Thomas Worthington, sixth governor of Ohio and one of the state's first United States Senators. The mansion house, completed in 1806-1807, was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who is considered the first professional American architect and served as an architect of the U.S. capitol under President Thomas Jefferson.

The state of Ohio acquired Adena in 1946. The Ohio Historical Society, which administers the site, partially restored the drawing room and opened the house for tours in 1947. The restoration was completed in 1953. Another restoration was begun in 1997 and was completed for the state's bicentennial in 2003. The mansion looks much as it did when the Worthington family lived there with many original Worthington family furnishings. In addition to the mansion, five outbuildings and formal gardens are situated on 300 acres of the original estate. The Museum and Education Center, which opened in 2003, features interactive exhibits that use the stories of people connected to Adena to give visitors a picture of life in Ohio in the early 1800s as well as classrooms, meeting and rental space.

Adena is located at the south end of Adena Road, off Pleasant Valley Road, which is the first road west off of State Route 104, just north of the US 35 interchange at the north edge of Chillicothe in Ross County. It is one of 58 historic sites and museums operated by the Ohio Historical Society, a private, nonprofit organization that serves as the state's partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio’s history, archaeology, historic architecture and natural history.

For more information about the meeting, contact George Kane, the Society’s director of historic sites and facilities, at 614.297.2441 or at gkane@ohiohistory.org.
