Hayes Presidential Center sews up quilt lecture series

(FREMONT, Ohio) — In conjunction with its exhibit Patterns from the Past: Quilts of Northern Ohio, the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center explores the development of sewing techniques during the 19th Century with a FREE lecture at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 26 in the Hayes Museum auditorium. Guest speaker is Gretchen Schultz, one of the owners of the Quilt Foundry in Maumee, Ohio, and a collector of vintage quilts and quilt-making accessories.

Topic for the lecture is Antique Sewing Tools. Mrs. Schultz displays and discusses the history of a myriad of pieces from her collection of vintage sewing implements - from tiny "needle cases" to elaborate musical sewing boxes. Components from her collection are incorporated in the Patterns from the Past exhibit.

Throughout the presentation, Mrs. Schultz explains the purpose of the various tools on display. A student of the history of sewing and quilt making, she offers insights into the development of both as related to technological advancements and artistic expression. She also shares examples of 19th-century quilts from her personal collection.

Mrs. Schultz's lecture is the final in a series of four events designed to highlight the Hayes Presidential Center's exclusive exhibit Patterns from the Past: Quilts of Northern Ohio on display now through Jan. 4, 2009. The exhibit features 30 quilts made in the 19th century by Northern Ohio women. The quilts are displayed in both the Hayes Museum and Hayes Home. A combination ticket priced at $10.50/adults, $9.50/senior citizens and $4/children ages 6-12 gains entry to view all of the quilts. Sunday hours for the Museum and Hayes Home are noon-5 p.m. Tours of the home are guide led and last 45 minutes. Museum tours are self-guided. Please allow a minimum of an hour to tour the Museum.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont, Ohio. The facility is affiliated with the Ohio Historical Society. Check the Hayes Presidential Center website www.rbhayes.org for a complete list of year-round special events.
