Ohio Historical Center Features Home Movie Day Oct. 17
Folks Can Bring Films for InspectionThen Enjoy the Show

(COLUMBUS, OH) - The Ohio Historical Society’s first Home Movie Day will be held Oct. 17, from 1–4 p.m. at the Ohio Historical Center. Bring your 8mm and 16mm films to be inspected by an archivist and played on working projectors. Or, just come and enjoy the show.

From the 1930s through the 1960s, many of us were stars, directors or camera operators of home movies shot on 8mm or 16mm film. The lighting is often too dim, the sound can be hard to hear and the cameras bob up and down. Yet, home movies are eternally charming.

For decades they preserved our memories of holidays and milestones like first steps and first words, school plays, graduations, homecomings, birthdays and anniversaries. They also recorded everyday events like children's tea parties, games of dress-up, sled riding and bath time.

Forgotten But Not Gone
Today many of the home movies made in the 20th century are stored in shoeboxes in the bottom of closets. The cameras and film needed to shoot them are no longer available and the projectors that we once had to play them are broken or missing, but the movies themselves remain with us. Film archivists and historians have long appreciated home movies as examples of amateur filmmaking and as a rich historical record of everyday life.

Home Movie Day
To bring home movies out of the shoebox and help people view the original films, the Center for Home Movies began Home Movie Day. The first event was held in 2003, and Home Movie Day has been held every year since at more and more locations.

According to actor and comedian Steve Martin, "Home Movie Day is important because our lives, our recollections and our truth are recorded in home movies. One day, what the heck, c’mon!"

See Your Original Films
"We'll inspect and play as many films as possible," said Lisa Wood of the society's Archives/Library.

Participation is free with museum admission and no registration is necessary, but the sooner you arrive the more likely it is that your film can be played. Admission to the Ohio Historical Center: $8/adults, $7/senior (age 60 and up), $4/youth (ages 6-12) and free for OHS members and children 5 years old and under. Parking is $4 and free for members.
