Historical Novelist To Speak At Campus Martius Oct. 18
New Novel Features Story of William Wells, Veteran of Ohio’s Indian Wars

(MARIETTA, Ohio) — William Heath, author of a recently published historical novel about the Northwest Territory, Blacksnake's Path: The True Adventures of William Wells, will give a presentation about his book at the Ohio Historical Society’s Campus Martius Museum on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 2 – 3 p.m. Campus Martius is located at 601 Second St. in Marietta

Blacksnake's Path is based on the remarkable life of a previously unsung hero of the frontier, William Wells, who was captured by the Miami Indians when he was 13 years of age, and grew up to fight at the side of his father-in-law, the great Miami war chief Little Turtle, at St. Clair's Defeat in 1791, the biggest victory the Indians ever won against the U.S. Army.

In 1792, Wells switched sides and served under Rufus Putnam at Vincennes before becoming head scout for Mad Anthony Wayne at the battle of Fallen Timbers. Wells was the translator for the Treaty of Greenville and then became Indian agent to the Miami at Fort Wayne. He died a martyr in the Fort Dearborn Massacre of 1812.

William Heath, a native of Ohio, is the Libman Professor of Humanities at Hood College in Frederick, Md. He also is the author of an award-winning novel about the civil rights movement in Mississippi, The Children Bob Moses Led. Copies of Blacksnake’s Path will be available to purchase at the talk.

Heath’s talk is included with admission to Campus Martius: $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $4 for children (ages 6-12) and free to members of the Ohio Historical Society and the Friends of the Museum. For more information, call the Campus Martius Museum at 740.373.3750 or 800.860.0145 or e-mail averhoff@ohiohistory.org.

The Campus Martius and Ohio River Museums are two of 58 sites administered by the Ohio Historical Society, a nonprofit organization that serves as the state’s partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio’s history, archaeology and natural history. Visit us at www.ohiohistory.org.
