Hayes Research Library institutes new security measures
(FREMONT) – A series of new procedures now is in effect regarding use of resources in the Hayes Research Library at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.
Effective immediately, all Library visitors are asked to present a photo ID and to fully complete a visitor registry (signing in with full name, address, phone number). All Library visitors also must place coats, briefcases, tote bags, backpacks, and similar items on the coat rack or in the adjoining lockers before they enter the Library’s Reading Room. No cameras or scanning devices are permitted in the Library.
Visitors requesting access to rare books or to any of the Manuscripts and Photographic collections are required to surrender their photo IDs to the Library staff before being permitted access to these materials. The photo ID will be returned only after the research materials have been returned and checked by Library staff. Anyone not presenting a photo ID will not be permitted access to these materials.
In addition, those granted access to rare books, manuscripts or historic photographs are required to use them in a specially designated area. The only objects permitted in the designated area are a laptop computer or a pencil and paper notepad. Anytime an individual leaves the designated area, resource materials will be re-shelved or retained at the desk of a Library staff member.
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is instituting these measures in response to the recent theft of two items from its collections. The new policies are in compliance with security guidelines recommended by the Association of College & Research Libraries.
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont, Ohio. The facility is affiliated with the Ohio Historical Society. Check the Hayes Presidential Center website www.rbhayes.org for a complete list of year-round special events.
