Fort Hill To Conduct Lottery for Deer Season
Entries For Youth, Adult Hunts Due Oct. 9

(HILLSBORO, Ohio) - The Ohio Historical Society will conduct separate lotteries to allow deer hunting for youth and adults at Fort Hill in Hillsboro, Ohio, during the 2009-10 firearms seasons.

The Youth Hunt will take place Nov. 21-22, 2009, where one to two youths (age 17 and younger) may hunt with an unarmed adult mentor. The Adult Hunt will be Nov. 30-Dec. 6, 2009, again on Dec.19-20, 2009 and muzzleloaders only from Jan. 9 through 12, 2010. Up to two adults may hunt together.

To enter either lottery, send a postcard or e-mail with the mentor's name and address for the Youth Hunt or each adult hunter’s name and address for the Adult Hunt. Two hunters may apply for a "buddy hunt," but both names and addresses must be on the same application. Be sure to specify "Youth Hunt" or "Regular Deer Hunt." Entries, which must be received no later than Oct. 9, can be mailed to the Ohio Historical Society, Attention: Bob Glotzhober, 1982 Velma Ave., Columbus, OH 43211 or e-mailed to bglotzhober@ohiohistory.org. Those chosen will be notified no later than Oct. 15.

There will be a mandatory orientation session for participants of both hunts at 10 a.m., Nov. 7 at the Fort Hill shelter house. All hunters must bring a valid 2009 state of Ohio hunting license to the orientation.

For safety reasons, Fort Hill will be closed to visitors during the dates of the hunts. For more information about the lottery, contact Bob Glotzhober, OHS senior curator of natural history, at 614.298.2054 or bglotzhober@ohiohistory.org.

Fort Hill is located off of State Route 41 on Township Road 256, five miles north of Sinking Springs and three miles south of Cynthiana in Highland County. It is one of 58 sites administered by the Ohio Historical Society, a private, nonprofit organization that serves as the state's partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio's history, archaeology and natural history. Fort Hill is operated by the Arc of Appalachia Preserve.
