Echoes in Time Theatre Honors Ohio's Poet Laureate
Ohio Historical Center presents "An Evening with Paul Laurence Dunbar"
(COLUMBUS, Ohio, August 14, 2009) – The Ohio Historical Center in Columbus will be presenting "An Evening with Paul Laurence Dunbar" as its featured Echoes in Time Theatre performance on Thursday evenings starting Aug. 27 and Sept. 3, 10, 17 and 24.
Paul Laurence Dunbar was the first African American to gain national eminence as a poet. Born in 1872 in Dayton, he was the son of former slaves and a classmate of future aviation pioneer Orville Wright. Although he lived to be only 33 years old, Dunbar was prolific, writing poetry, short stories, novels, librettos, plays, songs and essays. He wrote in standard English and the evocative dialect of the turn-of-the-century black community in America. He was popular with both black and white readers of his day, and his works are celebrated today by scholars and students alike. Dunbar is portrayed by Anthony Gibbs of Canal Winchester, Ohio.
Each 30-minute Echoes in Time solo performance takes place at 7 and 8 p.m. Admission to the Ohio Historical Center is $8/adults, $7/senior (age 60 and up), $4/youth (ages 6-12) and free for OHS members and children 5 years old and under. Parking is $4 for nonmembers. For more information, visit www.ohiohistory.org or call 614.297.2300 or 800.686.6124.
The Ohio Historical Center is located on I-71 and 17th Avenue. It is one of 58 historic museums and sites operated by the Ohio Historical Society, a nonprofit organization that serves as the state’s partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio’s history, archaeology and natural history.
