'The President’s Own' coming to the Hayes Presidential Center

(FREMONT, Ohio, July 31, 2008) – A brass quintet from the United States Marine Band helps welcome direct descendants of President Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes during the Celebrating Presidential Memories event Saturday, August 9 at the Hayes Presidential Center. The five members of the band - including Fremont native Amy Horn - present a free concert at 1 p.m. on the verandah of the Hayes Home. Concert attendees are reminded to bring their own seats.

Celebrating Presidential Memories is a one-time-only event that for the first time unites descendants of the Hayes and Webb families. In addition to meeting the President's family who will be wearing red corsages (Lucy descendants will wear blue flowers), the all-day activities also include free tours of historic sites on the grounds of Spiegel Grove, a free program about the Hayes family's genealogy (at 11:30 a.m. & 2:30 p.m.), and a ticket-holders-only evening gala featuring Master of Ceremonies Dave Carlson of WTOL-TV.

The United States Marine Band is better known as The President's Own. Formed in 1798 by an Act of Congress, it is the oldest professional musical organization in the nation. Its primary mission is to provide music for the President of the United States. The talented musicians that serve in the band must meet the high standards of musicianship set down by the group's 17th director, John Philip Sousa.

Members of the U.S. Marine Band Brass Quintet performing during Celebrating Presidential Memories include Brian Turnmire and Amy McCabe on trumpet/cornet, Amy Horn on French horn, Preston Hardage on trombone, and Paul Mergen on tuba. The quintet is one of several ensembles within The President's Own that present chamber concerts and educational clinics.

Horn has been with the U.S. Marine Band since 1987. She is a graduate of Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic School and Bowling Green State University. She holds a master's degree from the Catholic University of America and is a doctoral candidate in music at the University of Maryland. She is the daughter of Norman and Barbara Horn of Fremont.

For more information about Celebrating Presidential Memories or to purchase tickets for the evening gala ($150 per person, $2,000 table of 10 & sponsor recognition) contact Development Director Kathy Boukissen at kboukissen@rbhayes.org.
