Exhibition Sews Up African American History at Ohio Historical Center
Threads With Soul! Feature Columbus Quilters
(Columbus, Ohio) - Art quilts take center stage at the Ohio Historical Center as Threads with Soul! opens July 30 and runs through September 6. The show is the third in a series of community art exhibitions held in conjunction with Soul! Art from the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center.
Threads with Soul! showcase the talents of the Columbus quilting group, the African Parish House Quilters, and features 15 pieces from members Barbara Payne, Deborah E. Pinckney, Alicia Spencer, Pauline Sheppard and Barbara Green. These colorful works of art include coverlets, wall hangings, dolls and vests.
A Stitch in Time
The African Parish House Quilters, founded by Wyrelene Mays, Barbara Payne and Deborah Pinckney, was formed to honor African American history, while also promoting the art of quilting through exhibits, instruction and encouragement. At their first meeting in May 1997, 13 women gathered to make their first quilt block-the Nine Patch.
The African Parish House Quilters is a community outreach program of the Hebron Baptist Church located at 189 N. 20th Street, Columbus, OH 43203. Works for these quilters have been exhibited at the African Parish House, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, Mt. Vernon Avenue A.M.E. Church Annex, Second Baptist Church, State Auto Insurance Company, The Columbus Museum of Art, The Kelton House, and The Ohio State University.
Learn To Quilt
The quilters will be hosting three quilting workshops from 1-4 p.m., August 29 at Ohio Historical Center. Learn how to make Nine-Patch Blocks, Reverse Appliqué and Family Story Squares. The workshops are free with museum admission: $8/adults, $4/youth (ages 6-12) and free for OHS members and children 5 years of age and under.
Soul! Art from the National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center is a display of 120 works dating from 1835 to 2003 that reflect African heritage, family, self-determination, love, celebration and other experiences deriving from being Black in America. Comprised of art on loan from the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center in Wilberforce, Ohio, the exhibit features works in a variety of media by many renowned artists, including Benny Andrews, Richmond Barthé, Elizabeth Catlett and Willis "Bing" Davis. The exhibition runs through Feb. 28, 2010.
Museum hours are: Thursdays, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sundays, noon-5 p.m. The Ohio Historical Center is located at I-71 and 17th Avenue in Columbus. Parking is $4 per vehicle and free to OHS members. Parking through Aug. 9 during the Ohio State Fair is $5 and free to OHS members with membership card.
