Learn how to put A Modern Twist on Old Quilt Blocks

(FREMONT, Ohio, July 29, 2008) – The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, in conjunction with its NEW exhibit Patterns from the Past: Quilts of Northern Ohio, presents a lecture titled A Modern Twist on Old Quilt Blocks by quilt artist Amy Reitzel. The free event takes place 2-3 p.m. Sunday, August 3 in the Hayes Museum auditorium.

Reitzel is a quilting instructor and employee at Sonflower Gifts & Quilts in Sylvania. She began sewing at age 6 and started quilting at age 14. In her early years of quilting Reitzel quilted everything by hand. Now, she quilts almost exclusively by machine. She loves to experiment with color and design. Her most recent works employ patterns created using curved piecing.

Reitzel is an innovative quilter. This year, Schedel Gardens & Arboretum in Elmore had a showing of her quilt artistry. Her work also has been displayed at the American Quilting Society Expo, Kaleidoscope of Quilts, Monroe County Fair, and the Michigan State Fair. She has received numerous "Best in Show" awards and first-place honors.

Her lecture is the second in a series of four that highlights quilting. All lectures take place Sunday afternoon and are free of charge. Those attending can take advantage of their visit to the Hayes Presidential Center to view Patterns from the Past: Quilts of Northern Ohio. The exhibit showcases 30 quilts made in the 19th century by Northern Ohio women. The quilts are displayed in the Hayes Museum and Hayes Home. A combination ticket priced at $10.50/adults, $9.50/senior citizens and $4/children ages 6-12 gains entry to view all of the quilts. Sunday hours for the Museum and Hayes Home are noon-5 p.m. Tours of the home are guide led and last 45 minutes. Museum tours are self-guided. Please allow a minimum of an hour to tour the Museum.

Other quilt lectures scheduled include:

  • Sept. 14 - Joseph Sarah, an expert on quilts and owner of American Textiles in Columbus, discusses Uncovering Your Quilt’s History. He invites those attending to bring their own vintage quilts to share to and learn about their origins, patterns, fabrics, ages, stitching, history, and value.
  • Oct. 26 - Gretchen Schultz of the Quilt Foundry in Maumee shares her knowledge of Antique Sewing Tools. Schultz displays a selection of items from her collection, components of which are included the Patterns from the Past exhibit

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont, Ohio. The facility is affiliated with the Ohio Historical Society. Check the Hayes Presidential Center website www.rbhayes.org for a complete list of year-round special events.
