Lecture examines link between baseball and U.S. Presidents
FREMONT - The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center welcomes baseball enthusiast Mel Marmer of
Cincinnati as guest presenter for a free lecture at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 26 in the Hayes Museum.
Marmer speaks on the topic Baseball and U.S. Presidents. The public is encouraged to attend the
lecture and to stay for a free 1860s base ball match at 2 p.m. featuring the Spiegel Grove Squires
and Wyandotte Ghost Riders of Upper Sandusky.
Marmer is a retired tax attorney. He combined his interests in baseball and presidential history to
create Baseball and U.S. Presidents. Marmer has presented the program at the Eisenhower and Truman
presidential libraries, William H. Taft Historic Site, and at the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
His PowerPoint presentation includes references to the relationships between pre-1900 presidents
and baseball, short stories about 20th-century presidents and baseball, and a selection of
presidential and baseball trivia. For example, who is the only U.S. President to have played
professional baseball? Come to the lecture to find out!
