Traditional Craft Artisans Come to Fort Ancient
Demonstrations Featured July through October

(Oregonia, Ohio, July 10, 2008) – Native American artisans will be teaching traditional crafts at Fort Ancient. Four women, who refer to themselves as "The Grandmothers," will be sharing their knowledge and skills in an effort to carry on centuries of this tradition.

The four-hour demonstrations begin at 1 p.m., the fourth Saturday of the month. Participants can bring their own project to work on and share, or learn something new. A minimal materials fee will be charged for those who wish to make a craft.

Upcoming craft demonstrations include:

  • July 26-Learn to create the Cherokee Choker using hairpipe, beads, sinew and leather. Materials cost is $3.50.
  • August 23-Native Americans used birch bark to make containers, hunting and fishing gear, musical instruments and even children's toys. Several birch-bark crafts will be demonstrated. Materials cost is $3.50.
  • Sept. 26- Learn to make a traditional leather pouch. Native Americans used these small bags to contain food, smoking supplies, medicine, fire-starting equipment, ammunition, and other small tools and supplies. Materials cost is $3.50.
  • October 25-Gathering, preparing and storing natural craft items can be fun and cost effective, and often includes flowers, mushrooms and assorted berries. Materials cost is $.50.

Fort Ancient is one of 58 sites operated by the Ohio Historical Society, a private, nonprofit organization that serves as the state’s partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio’s history, archaeology and natural history.

Fort Ancient is located in Warren County, approximately 20 minutes north of King’s Island, off Interstate 71. The cost of the event is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Two-day passes available at the gate. The event is half price to Ohio Historical Society members and Fort Ancient Season Pass holders.
