Ohio Historical Society, Columbus City Schools Win National History Award
(NASHVILLE, TN July 3, 2008) – The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) proudly announces that the Ohio Historical Society and Columbus City Schools in Columbus, Ohio, are the recipients of an Award of Merit from the AASLH Leadership in History Awards for the Near East Side Community History Project. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards, now in its 63rd year, is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.
AASLH is also pleased to announce that, in addition to the Award of Merit, the the Near East Side Community History Project, was also selected as a 2008 WOW Award winner by the Leadership in History awards committee.
The WOW Award, given at the discretion of the Committee, is an additional award for an Award of Merit winner whose nomination is highly inspirational, exhibits exceptional scholarship, and/or is exceedingly entrepreneurial in terms of funding, partnerships, or collaborations, creative problem solving, or unusual project design and
inclusiveness. Only two WOW Awards will be presented in 2008. AASLH congratulates the Ohio Historical Society and Columbus City Schools for the work that has brought this honor.
The award-winning project, coordinated by the Ohio Historical Society and sponsored by the Ingram-White Castle fund of the Columbus Foundation, involved third-grade and eighth-grade students from Columbus Public Schools who conducted oral history interviews and completed research about their neighborhood, the Near Eastside of Columbus. This research was then used to erect five Ohio Historical Markers in the neighborhood.
Awards for 2008 represent 57 organizations and individuals from across the United States. Award winners will be honored at a special banquet during the 2008 AASLH Annual Meeting in Rochester, New York, on Friday, September 12. A generous contribution from The History Channel will once again help underwrite the cost of the awards banquet.
The AASLH awards program was initiated in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards not only honor significant achievement in the field of state and local history, but also brings public recognition of the opportunities for small and large organizations, institutions, and programs to make contributions in this arena.
