Flint Ridge Features Five Events for July
(Glenford, Ohio, June 25, 2008) – Flint Ridge, an Ohio Historical Society site where native Ohioans mined high-quality flint for making tools, will be hosting a series of summer events highlighting the state's Native American and pioneer heritage. In July, visitors can step back in time to learn about flint knapping, ancient tools and weapons, Native American stories and pottery.
As part of its ongoing Summer Weekend Series, Flint Ridge will be hosting master flint knapper Ed Moreland July 12 as he demonstrates the ancient art of crafting raw flint into projectile points and tools from noon to 5:00 p.m. Donations are accepted for this event.
From July 18- 20, visitors can experience the fun of throwing a long dart with a tool that dates back thousands of years called an atlatl at the Ohio Atlatl Association Practice and Competition. The event is open to the public 1-5 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. -6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. On Saturday at 2 p.m., Skeeter Kish will explore the atlatl, including its construction, physics, and history. The following day from noon to 5 p.m., flintknapper Chris Miller will demonstrate the fashioning projectile points. Donations accepted.
Beginning flint-knappers will want to attend the flint knapping workshops led by Master flintknappers Phil Love and Chris Miller July 19 from 11 a.m.-12:30 pm and 1-2:30 p.m. Registrants will be provided flint flakes and pressure flaking tools. This workshop is open to children 12 years and older and adults. Please call to make reservations, specifying workshop time. Phil Love leads a beginner's workshop July 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in pottery making using the same techniques of Ohio Native Americans. The class will begin with the processing of the clay and lead into each participant’s actual construction of a pinch or coil pot. To register, call 740-344-1919 or 1-800-600-7178. Workshop fee is $20 per participant (adult or child).
Dewey Chaffin, Cherokee storyteller, will provide a variety of Native American stories July 27 from 2-3 p.m. at the Flint Ridge museum. Donations accepted.
Flint Ridge is one of 59 sites operated by the Ohio Historical Society, a private, nonprofit organization that serves as the state’s partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio’s history, archaeology, and natural history. The site is located at 7091 Brownsville Road, SE, in Glenford. It is four miles north of I-70, three miles north of Brownsville, in Licking County, at the intersection of county roads 668 and 312 (Flint Ridge Road). Exit eastbound I-70 at state Route 668 and westbound I-70 at exit 142.
