Ohio's Only Revolutionary War Site Celebrates Fourth of July at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

(BOLIVAR, Ohio, June 19, 2008) – , Ohio) - A celebration of freedom and sacrifice will take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier July 4 at 10 a.m. at Fort Laurens in Bolivar, Ohio.

In 1779, a garrison of fewer than 200 Americans withstood a siege of British and allied Indian forces at this outpost on the Ohio frontier. Through the long winter, the troops fought off enemy attacks and the threat of starvation. Twenty- three soldiers died. Their sacrifice is honored in the Fort Laurens Tomb of the Unknown Patriot of the American Revolution, the final resting place of one of the fallen defenders of the Fort.

The ceremony will feature reenactors from the Battalion of the American Revolution complete with Military gun salute. The event is sponsored by the Ohio Historical Society with the participation of The Friends of Fort Laurens, American Legion of Bolivar and local Boy Scouts.

Fort Laurens is located at the south edge of Bolivar, in Tuscarawas County, on County Road 102 about 1/2 mile south of State Route 212. Take Exit 93 off I-77. For additional information, call 330-874-2059 or 800-283-8914 or go online at www.ohiohistory.org.
