Ohio Village Hosts Old-Time Independence Day Celebration July 4
Glorious Fourth Features Patriotic Fun for All
(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – Step back in time to when celebrating the Fourth of July meant an afternoon of patriotic speeches, deliciously cold ice cream and ball games. The Glorious Fourth: Independence Day Celebration features fun for the whole family from noon to 5 p.m. July 4 at the Ohio Village in Columbus.
The day will kick off around 1:30 p.m. with a grand procession and Independence Day ceremony. The afternoon will be highlighted by a performance by the Ohio Village Singers that is set to begin at 2 p.m. The Fourth of July show marks the 35th anniversary of the Singers. The troupe, which began in 1974, is the longest performing group of period music singers in the country.
Families are also invited to take part in period games, play tug-of-war or even take part in a delicious pie-eating contest. Along with all the tasty pastry, there will also be the chance to try some unique ice creams flavors and make homemade ice cream while learning about the special history of this scrumptious summer treat. For those want a three-square meal, there will be traditional Fourth of July food for sale.
For all the sports fans out on hand there will also be an old-time base ball (traditionally two words) game featuring the nationally-recognized Ohio Village Muffins. Throughout the day there will also be readings from the Declaration of Independence, storytelling, patriotic music, a sing-along to 1890s-style music and a community dance. Dr. Balthasar will also be on hand to perform his "“Miracle Medicine Show," where he will display how his mysterious elixir can cure consumption, grow hair, improve eyesight and do much more.
"For 19th-century Ohioans, the Fourth of July was a day of good times and good memories," said Susan Brouillette of the Ohio Historical Society. "This year, the Ohio Historical Society invites its visitors to relive a traditional holiday festivities from 1895 through music, oratory, food, games and other activities at the Ohio Village."
Admission for the special event is $12 for adults; $9 for children ages 6-12; $10 for adult members of the Ohio Historical Society and $7 for child members. Parking is $4 and free for members.
