Ohio River Museum Hours Extended Through Summer
Support from Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen Increases Access

(MARIETTA, Ohio) – The Ohio Historical Society's Ohio River Museum will not only be able to stay open for the 2009 season, but it's hours will be extended thanks to the financial support from the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen, according to George Kane, OHS director of Historic Sites and Facilities. The museum had been open weekends only for public visitation since Memorial Day and uncertain state funding made keeping the site open through the summer in doubt.

Kane said, "With the drastic cuts to support for historic sites and museums in the upcoming 2010-2011 state budget, it made it necessary to reduce access to its many of OHS sites across the state. Looking for local organizations to either manage sites or provide financial support has been our top priority. We sincerely appreciate the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen involvement in Ohio River Museum. Their contribution will enable us to keep the museum open on more days through September."

The Ohio River Museum consists of three exhibit buildings, the first of which houses displays depicting the origins and natural history of the Ohio River. The history of the steamboat on the Ohio River system is featured in the second building, along with a video presentation on river steamboats. The last building features displays about boat building, mussels in the Ohio River system, and tool and equipment from the steamboat era. The W. P. SNYDER JR., the last steam-powered stern-wheeled towboat in the United States and a National Historic Landmark, is moored at the museum's dock on the Muskingum River.

Through Sept. 7, new hours will be Wednesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. –5 p.m., Sunday from noon–5 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. The museum will be closed on Tuesdays. From Sept. 8–20, the site will be open Friday and Saturday from 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday from noon–5 p.m.

The Ohio River Museum is located at 601 Front Street in Marietta. For more information about programs at Campus Martius or the Ohio River Museum, please call 740.373.3750 or toll-free 800.860.0145, or e-mail cmmoriv@ohiohistory.org.
