Hayes Presidential Center organizes a local Croquet Club

(FREMONT, Ohio) – Lawn sports are making a comeback and the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is getting in on the action. An informational meeting about the Hayes Presidential Center Croquet Club takes place 2-3 p.m. Sunday, May 3 in the Hayes Museum auditorium. Anyone interested – regardless of level of experience or inexperience – is encouraged to attend. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served. For more information or to pre-register call 419-332-2081.

Gail DeFrance and Renee Dayringer chair the meeting. The pair has been playing backyard croquet for years and is helping organize the new club. Their presentation explains how croquet is played, the type and use of equipment, and rules of play. A short video and display are part of the meeting.

Those attending can learn about membership in the Hayes Presidential Croquet Club and establishment of a croquet court on the grounds of Spiegel Grove. The club plans to conduct monthly tournaments June through August. Equipment will be provided. It also is to host a series of free croquet clinics during the 2009 Independence Day Concert on Saturday, July 4.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center has one of the nation’s most comprehensive collections of printed material related to the sport of croquet. Croquet was extremely popular during the life of President Hayes and was played by the Hayes family. Creation of the Hayes Presidential Croquet Club not only highlights these facts, but also is designed to build enthusiasm for a national croquet tournament scheduled for 2010 at the Hayes Presidential Center. That community/family event – Wine, Wickets & Wheels - will feature professional, amateur, and pro/am competitive play, wine tasting, wine auction, and a Mercedes Benz car show. More details will be announced in the near future.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont, Ohio. The facility is affiliated with the Ohio Historical Society. Check the Hayes Presidential Center website www.rbhayes.org for a complete list of year-round special events.
