Students Compete In National History Day At CSCC
A History Day Event Hosted By The Ohio Historical Society
(COLUMBUS, OHIO) – Join students grades 6-12 from all over Ohio as they participate on Saturday, April 25 in the state competition for National History Day, an exciting competition that encourages young people to submit imaginative exhibits, original performances, media documentaries web sites, and papers related to this year's theme: "The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies." This year students are challenged to explore staple events involving such figures as Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Jan Adams, and Caesar Chavez among others and capture their significance.
"Students make history come alive through their research and projects," says Megan Wood, state coordinator for National History Day in Ohio at the Ohio Historical Society. "History Day demonstrates that students learn history when they do history."
Students participate in History Day events at the district, state and national levels. Historians, educators, and professionals in related fields evaluate students' work based on historical accuracy, relation to theme, and clarity of presentation. Each student competing is a winner from their respective district events. The State event will host 600 or more entries on April 25 at Columbus State Community College. Fifty will be selected to compete at National History Day. For a tentative schedule of the event please visit the OHS website at: www.ohiohistory.org/historyday/hd03b.html
Immediately after the competition, the public is also invited to observe the judging and award ceremony at the Palace Theater at 4 p.m. Awards for outstanding exhibition include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame award, the Gay and Lesbian History award, the Teacher of Merit award, and the Society of Ohio Activist award.
Originally sponsored by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1970s, History Day with its competitions, awards and educational activities, has grown into a national event, based in Washington, D.C.
Parking is free all day in any lot on the CSCC Campus for this event.
