Business is "Blooming" at Ohio Historical Society Plant Sales
Heirloom Tomatoes, Annuals and Perennials Being Readied for Purchase

COLUMBUS, Ohio February 21, 2008 – Hearts of Compassion, Mortgage Lifter, Job's Tears, Arkansas Traveler, Love Lies Bleeding and Mule Team are not your normal plant names, but some of the many kinds of heirlooms that will be available for sale at the Ohio Historical Society's Heirloom Plant Sales at Adena Mansion & Gardens in Chillicothe and the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus. Gardeners will be able to select their favorite heirlooms from more than 40 different varieties of tomatoes and dozens of annuals and perennials. "The popularity of heirloom gardening continues to grow," said Richard Warnock, master gardener at Adena Mansion & Gardens. "Consumers are rediscovering older varieties. Baby Boomers, in particular, are getting back into heirloom gardening as they remember the gardens from their youth."

An heirloom plant is generally considered to be an open-pollinated variety that has been passed down through the years because of its valued characteristics. Many of the plants being featured at this year’s sales have been cultivated in the Adena gardens for generations. Adena was the home of Thomas Worthington, who was sixth governor of Ohio and one of the state's first United States senators.

The plant sale at Adena Mansion & Gardens will feature the most antique varieties of tomatoes, flowers and herbs for purchase. It runs from April 26–May 4, daily from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Adena is located at 847 Adena Rd., Chillicothe. Admission to the plant sale is free. For more information, call 740.772.1500, ext. 101, or 800.319.7248, ext. 101.

People from the Columbus area won’t have to drive far for vintage varieties. The plant sale at the Ohio Historical Center will also offer a large selection tomatoes, flowers and herbs Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday, May 4 from noon–5 p.m. In addition to buying plants singly and in packs, the sale will feature hanging baskets and other arrangements. The Center is located at I-71 and 17th Avenue. Admission to the plant sale is free.

To ensure the best selection, however, heirlooms can be preordered from March 1–31 at the Ohio History Store at the Ohio Historical Center or online at www.ohiohistory.org/plantsale/ for pick-up May 3–4. For more information, call 614.297.2300 or 800.686.6124.
