Campus Martius Museum Seeking Volunteers
Volunteer job fair at museum on Saturday morning, Mar. 7. No experience necessary, just a desire to learn new things, help kids, and work with the public.
(MARIETTA, Ohio) – Do you want to learn more about Marietta's history and get younger generations enthused about it? Do you like meeting and talking with people of all ages?
The Ohio Historical Society's Campus Martius Museum needs more volunteers to help with school programs and give tours of the Rufus Putnam House in 2009. If you've ever been curious about helping at the museum, make sure to attend Campus Martius' volunteer job fair on Saturday morning, Mar. 7 from 9 am – 12:30 pm. The museum is located at the corner of Second and Washington Streets in Marietta, 601 Second Street.
"We couldn't operate the museums without our wonderful corps of dedicated volunteers," says museum manager Andy Verhoff, "but we need more help." Volunteers are needed to help with school workshops especially, and lead tours of the Rufus Putnam House at Campus Martius.
During the volunteer job fair, prospective volunteers will spend the morning trying their hand at the museum's most popular school workshops. These include candle dipping, military defense, and weaving, among others, and tours of the Rufus Putnam House. The sessions will be led by experienced volunteers who were once new at the activities themselves and who are expert at explaining them to newcomers. Current members of the museum's corps of volunteers are also invited to attend to broaden their skills.
According to museum educator Glenna Hoff, "All a new volunteer needs is enthusiasm and the desire to learn and share with others. No prior knowledge of history or experience working with the public or children is needed." All training and information is provided. Once new volunteers join the museums volunteer corps, they are paired with experienced volunteers to "learn the ropes."
New volunteers are also required to complete, at no cost to them, a background check with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.
In addition to learning more about this history of the community, volunteers enjoy free admission to 58 Ohio Historical Society sites around the state and discounts in museum gift shops, among other benefits.
RSVPs for the volunteer job fair at Campus Martius are requested by Mar. 5 (so we know how many cookies to buy for the coffee break). To RSVP or for more information, call the Campus Martius Museum at 740-373-3750 or toll-free 800-860-0145 or email lhendershot@ohiohistory.org.
A separate volunteer job fair for those interested in helping at the Ohio River Museum and on board the towboat W.P. Snyder Jr. will be scheduled later in the spring.
The Campus Martius and Ohio River Museums are two of 58 sites administered by the Ohio Historical Society. The Ohio Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that serves as the state's partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio's history, archaeology and natural history.
